Ethiopia’s Own History Testifies It Negotiated For Port Access Since 13th Century
From the restoration of the Solomonid dynasty in 1270 onward, for the last 756 years, the Abyssinian (now Ethiopian) state was a highland power whose reliable access to the Red Sea (Massawa or Zeila, never Assab) was typically contingent on arrangements the king made with whoever controlled the coast—Sultans, pashas, Na’ibs, khedives, beys, colonial governors, European monarchs, and envoys.
Except for the 39 years Emperor Haile Selassie (1952-74) and a Colonel Mengistu Hailemariam (1974-1991) illegally annexed and ruled Eritrea and secured Ethiopia sovereign access to the Red Sea.
Just like the legal argument, the Prosperity Party’s “historical” argument is also bogus.
The peaceful path is negotiation.
