Asmara, 01 October 2025 – World Rabies Day, commemorated on 28 September, was observed at the national level in Asmara on 30 September under the theme “Act Now: You, Me, Community to Curb the Prevalence of Rabies Disease.”
Mr. Semere Amlesom, Director General of Agricultural Extension at the Ministry of Agriculture, stated that as a result of sustained awareness-raising activities and vaccination programs, significant progress has been achieved in controlling the disease. He called for reinforced efforts to ensure its total eradication.
Mr. Asgedom Tewolde, representing the Food and Agriculture Organization, emphasized that the day serves as an opportunity to reaffirm collective commitment to coordinated efforts and to enhance public awareness about rabies.
At the event, six research papers were presented by experts from the Ministries of Agriculture and Health, highlighting efforts undertaken in Eritrea to control the disease and outlining the progress achieved so far.
Dr. Yonas Woldu, Director of Animal and Plant Health at the Ministry of Agriculture, noted that Eritrea is working toward the eradication of rabies by 2030. He said that vaccination programs conducted between 2015 and 2025 have registered commendable results.
The event was attended by senior officials from the ministries, representatives of UN offices in Eritrea, representatives of colleges, experts, and invited guests.
