Conference Press Release:

“Law, Politics, and Islam in Africa: a conference to honor Bereket Habte Selassie”  April 12-14, 2007

Sponsored by several units on campus, including the Law School, the African Studies Center, the Department of African and Afro-American Studies, and the Center for Global Initiatives, the conference will draw many of the most important Africa-focused scholars from across the United States and from the African continent.  This conference is in part also a celebration of the publication of the memoirs of Bereket Habte Selassie, our most distinguished professor of African Studies. Dr. Selassie’s work as a statesman and as a scholar spans decades, and he has become an international icon of African devotion to freedom, justice, and good governance.

This conference is designed as an integral part of the University’s year-long emphasis on International Affairs as we open our important new hub of international inquiry, the FedEx Global Education Center.

Keynote Address by Gloria Steinem, 7 pm, April 12, followed by a reception.
