Mendefera, 07 March 2026 – Ms. Halima Mohammed, Minister of Education, called for giving due attention to pre-school and elementary education to enhance the overall capacity of the education sector. Minister Halima made the call at an activity assessment meeting conducted in Mendefera on 5 and 6 March to review educational programs in the Southern Region.
Minister Halima, noting the significant investment the Government is making in the education sector, called on educational institutions in general and teachers in particular to exert stronger efforts with a view to achieving the desired objectives.
Noting that building educational capacity begins with efforts at the pre-school and elementary levels, Minister Halima called for reinforcing the participation of all stakeholders in the effort to expand pre-school facilities and address existing shortcomings.
Mr. Hibtizgi Kidane, head of the education office in the Southern Region, said that out of the more than 200 thousand students registered in the 2025/2026 academic year, 88% scored passing marks, and called for strengthening tripartite relations to achieve better outcomes.
In their reports, the heads of education offices in the sub-zones commended the public for the support extended to teachers, the renovation and construction of classrooms, as well as efforts made to address shortcomings in educational facilities.
Mr. Habteab Tesfatsion, Governor of the Southern Region, on his part expressed the readiness of the regional administration to support community and administrative initiatives aimed at addressing deficiencies in educational facilities, infrastructure construction, pre-school education, as well as other educational needs.
The participants conducted extensive discussion on the reports presented and expressed readiness to play their due part in the ongoing efforts.
