stands first in cycling race at the All Africa Games

Algiers, 14 July 2007 – Eritrea stood
first in the 170 km. cycling race at the All Africa Games underway
in Algiers today and was awarded a gold medal.
Moreover, Eritrea took gold medal at national and individual levels
in the Under-23 cycling competition. In this regard, 6 athletes
representing Eritrea, out of whom Firekalsi Debassai stood 2nd,
Merhawi Gebrehiwet 5th Daniel Teklehaimanot 9th and Dawit Haile
10th.
The National Athletics Team is also scheduled to leave for Algiers
tomorrow to take part in the Games |

Following a month and half long meetings in Asmara
at the invitation of Eritrea and the initiative of Libya and Chad, five
Darfur opposition groups have formed a United Front for Liberation and
Development (UFLD. In a joint communiquй they issued today, the group
said that they formed the united front so as to meet the challenges in
Darfur and Sudan in general.

ASMARA, July 14 (Reuters) - Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki said
officials from the Red Sea state would attend a meeting in Libya this
weekend aimed at advancing peace talks among Darfur's rebel groups. In
talks with the top U.N. envoy for Darfur, Jan Eliasson, Eritrea's
leader said more must be done to resolve a four-year-old crisis in the
western Sudanese region.

The United
Nations Development Program's (UNDP) Human Development Report (HDR)
was launched November 22, 2006 at the Hotel Intercontinental Asmara.
On that occasion, UNDP resident representative Macleod Nyirongo
noted that in analyzing Eritrea's developmental progress, despite
the prolonged no-peace-no-war situation, the country had moved from
ranking 161st last year, to 157th this year, placing it above
countries that enjoy far more natural resources.
