Resolution of
the long-simmering Ethiopia-Eritrea border dispute should be the U.N.
Security Council's priority, not simply dealing with Eritrea's rejection
of Western peacekeepers, U.S. Ambassador John Bolton said December.
|
|

Remarks by
Ambassador John R. Bolton, U.S. Permanent Representative to the United
Nations, on Ethiopia/Eritrea, at the Security Council Stakeout, December
14, 2005
Ambassador
Bolton: Let me start with Ethiopia/Eritrea. Obviously we’re faced
with a demand by the government of Eritrea that certain designated
military observers be withdrawn. I am going to meet with the
Secretary-General this morning and we’re going to decide what to do.
Obviously the government of Eritrea is acting unacceptably in making the
peacekeeping force
UNMEE part of the problem. But, of course, one reason we’re in this
dilemma is that the government of Ethiopia has never complied with its
obligations under the 2000 agreement and the 2002 border demarcation.
Ambassador Bolton: Well in a sense Ethiopia is dictating to the
Council, as they won’t adhere to the Arbitral Boundary Commission. And
that’s why as I say, while we need to deal with the Eritrean efforts to
restrict the peacekeeping force, I think we need to focus on the larger
issue, and if we don’t do that we’re going to miss an opportunity.

Khartoum
and Asmara….opening of hearts before opening of borders
(SudanSafary)
"....Now the visit of the First Vice-President to Asmara comes in the
context of responding to the initiative and to lay down established basses
for relations of the two countries, so that they can take their right
political dimension, not to be in the state of previous fluctuation in a

such a strategic view with its neighbor Sudan for years, there would have
not been any need to this fluctuations in relations

intentions are tactful, Sudan and Eritrea will go towards strategic
integration, as the Eritrean leadership called for. ...

Sudanese Foreign Minister Lam
Akol said Thursday that relations between
Sudan and
Eritrea are in steady progress.
In a press conference, Akol referred to
a recent visit to Sudan by an Eritrean delegation, terming the visit
as successful.
"The Eritrean visiting delegation
agreed with the Sudanese officials to stop launching smear campaigns
against each other to create a peaceful atmosphere conducive to
handling the remaining issues," said the minister. He said one
objective of his ministry in the national unity government is to
improve relations with neighboring countries, including Eritrea.
Sudan has long blamed Eritrea for
backing the Eastern Front rebels, who are fighting against the
Sudanese government for a bigger share of power and wealth in Africa's
largest country.
However, both Libyan and US governments
reported they had found no Eritrean troops on the Sudanese soil.
When asked about the anti-Eritrean
government forces hosted in Sudan, the minister said Sudan, under the
new type of relations with Eritrea, will treat them as refugees after
they are disarmed and promise not to launch any attacks against
Eritrea from Sudanese lands.
